Becoming a Better Developer, Software DevelopmentEach of us has our own set of strengths and weaknesses but we never take the time to figure out what they are. Even if you did would you know what to do with the information? You’ve probably heard that you need to identify weaknesses so you can fix them. After all, if you’re already strong in an area there’s no need to hone that skill, right? You should focus on your weaknesses so people don’t point and laugh at you when you try to…do whatever it is you’re weak at. Right? That’s what most people think, but I’ve found this approach to be a recipe for mediocrity.Becoming World ClassPeople who become world class at something begin with a strength in that area.Tiger Woods had some kind of pre-disposition to be a decent golfer. Paul McCartney had some kind of innate musical talent before he picked up a guitar, Yo-Yo Ma was likely a tiny bit better playing stringed instruments than his classmates, and Albert Einstein had something unique about his brain chemistry before he ever thought about the cosmos. But these strengths take time to develop. To become world-class or to take it one step beyond and re-define that term in your field you have to invest thousands of hours of focused practice into that strength. This is known in psychology as the ten thousand hour rule, and Malcolm Gladwell ruined it for the rest of us by beating this idea to death in his book Outliers. But the idea is that you need something on the order of 10,000 hours of focused practice to master something like the cello, golf, songwriting, or theoretical physics.

The National Anthem — And Why We Need Health Care Reform So Desperatelyuser-picBy Robert Reich – February 10, 2010, 11:37AMMy health insurer here in California is Anthem Blue Cross. When I first opted for it, it was just called Blue Cross. Then, a year or so back, I was notified that an entity called “Anthem” would now be running my insurance policy. I didn’t think much about it at the time. I’ve had the usual problems most people have with their health insurers – confusing bills, co-payments and deductibles that never seem to add up, a bureaucracy that gives every impression of being more interested in fighting me than helping me — but nothing more. Now, Anthem Blue Cross is going a step further. It’s raising rates for individual policyholders by as much as 39 percent. That’s fifteen times faster than inflation. So far, my group policy hasn’t been affected but I’m expecting the worst.

Paul Thurrott nails my view of the Droid and IPhone, I’ve used both for a couple of weeks now.

Quick Take: Verizon Droid and Google Android 2A few months back, my wife surprised me by announcing her interest in the then as-yet-unreleased Verizon Droid smart phone. She surprised me further a few weeks later by trucking over to the local Verizon Wireless store on the day the device was released and purchasing one. I was on a trip at the time, and while she’s obviously a fully-functioning adult, my wife has little to no interest in technology, so this was unusual. She had been using a sad excuse for a phone that couldn’t even be charitably called a feature phone; in fact, the Verizon salesperson treated my wife like an Amish farmer based almost solely on the age of her previous phone. My wife found this both slightly condescending and wildly funny.

8 ECM Predictions for 2010At the recent AIIM Board Meeting that I attended this month, AIIM President John Mancini asked us to blog using the number 8. Why 8? Because no one else is using that number and AIIM can brand around it. So what better way to start than with my 8 predictions for ECM and Open Source – emphasis on the former. I found that I had a lot more that I could have written, so I cheated and added two more on section 7+1 and section 8+1 for a total of 10. Still, I didn’t get around to my thoughts on Apple, mobile, Google, Google Wave, New Applications, Mergers and Acquisitions, etc. Since I have to go home and I am the last one in the office, this will have to do! I know it’s a lot, but I have been doing a lot of thinking lately.
